How We Handle Stress, Pressure, and Performance Anxiety

How We Handle Stress, Pressure, and Performance Anxiety

As a tight-knit team of BMX athletes, we’ve learned that stress is simply part of the process. Rather than seeing pressure as a negative, we embrace it as a signal that we’re pushing our limits and growing. When anxiety creeps in before a big show, we remind ourselves that nerves mean we care deeply about our performance. By normalizing these feelings within our group, we take away their power and replace them with excitement.

Our approach to handling pressure begins long before we roll up to the ramp. We train relentlessly so that muscle memory takes over when the stakes are high. We rehearse routines repeatedly until they become second nature, which gives us the confidence to perform under bright lights. Preparation is our safety net, and knowing we’ve put in the work helps us stay calm when the spotlight is on us.

We also rely on mental strategies to navigate performance anxiety. Deep breathing, visualization, and positive self-talk are tools we practice regularly. Before a show, we take a few moments to breathe together, envisioning successful tricks and smooth landings. This collective focus helps us align our energy and quiet the doubts that can creep in.

One of the biggest advantages of being a team is the support we offer each other. We talk openly about our fears and encourage one another to share what’s going on internally. Hearing teammates admit they’re nervous makes us all feel less alone, and offering words of encouragement builds trust. We know that if one of us stumbles, the others will be there to pick them up, both literally and emotionally.

Ultimately, we’ve learned to transform anxiety into fuel for our performance. The adrenaline that comes with stress sharpens our focus and elevates our intensity. We remind ourselves why we ride and how our shows inspire others to pursue their dreams. By channeling pressure into passion, we leave each event stronger and more connected as a team.
